A Heartbreaking Blog of Staggering Genius

How do you do?

There is one thing that I thought I ought to explain: the form of address I’ve used throughout the blog is the singular form of ‘you’.

The distinction is clear in Finnish, whereas English really doesn’t offer any neat way to make it clear. This doesn’t have to be a disadvantage, and indeed it is more of a boon.

See, the reason I chose to use the singular form was that I thought it would make the blog seem more intimate, more personal. This thinking is reflected in the traditional media1 as well: radio broadcasters use the singular whereas the telly people and print journalists opt for the plural.

I do feel (yes, this is a pure mutu) that the web is a more private medium than, say, the newspaper. I also think that web publications really need a way to distinguish between themselves and the pulp-based publications, if only to legitimate themselves.

1: The words ‘traditional media’ are often used in a way that suggests there is some fundamental difference between staring at ink and pixels.
